It was supposed to be a simple scout. To get in some exploring, get in the lay of the land while Garin and the rest of the crew tried to make sense of the fragments of map that brought them here in the first place. That may have been how the day started out, however, as her luck usually went with these things, that was not how it ended. The map fragments they found were enough for Garin at least to make sense of. His last scuffle with one of Captain Scarblade’s crewmates concluded with him not only getting the better of them; but also making off with a piece of parchment that was revealed to be one part of an old map which supposedly led to a decent prize. With help from the rest of the crew, their knowledge and experience throughout the five seas, as well as some of Sea Cat’s books, they were able to discern which island the treasure lay on. “I thought I smelled a rat.” Garin said with an angry glare, his ears pinning back against his head as he drew a blade like nothing Anna had ever seen before from beneath his brown vest. His crew followed suit, drawing their weapons and bodies tensing in a way that showed they were immediately ready for a fight as the figure stepped out into the open completely. “I suppose I should expect such a droll remark from you, Captain Garin,” the figure said, yellowing teeth peeling back into a sneer. “Bet let’s cut through the talk, shall we? It wasn’t unusual for her to be called back in from the field, so she wasn’t exactly alarmed at the sudden message she received from headquarters. What did alarm her was when she found out that more agents than just herself were called back in. It could only mean something big was happening. As to what, no one had any idea. They were all ordered to their dorms and told to stay there until further orders, and not to talk to anyone, not even their fellow agents. So Matilda just sat in her dorm quietly, reading a book she had forgotten she had started before she left on her last mission, deciding to start it over again just to be fresh. Whatever was going on, she was sure she would be given the full details later, so there was nothing she could really do except wait. An hour passed, then two, then three, and more. Several months passed, and Zijing had settled into life in the temple well. So well in fact that it seemed like she had lived there her whole life. She turned the little house that Sun, Bajie and Sha helped her clean out into a perfectly cozy home for herself. And every morning, she was up bright and early, earlier than the students even, to prepare breakfast for everyone. She even learned how to keep Bajie busy if he happened to be drawn out of bed and to the kitchen by the smell of food, so that he wouldn’t eat everything before everyone else arrived. She wasn’t harsh, but she was stern enough that he seemed to get the message. When she wasn’t preparing the daily meals, she was hard at work in the orchard, picking the fruits and vegetables as they ripened, pulling weeds and grooming the trees. Anna found herself waiting anxiously for Sea Cat’s return. She had left her alone in the room they were hiding in, in the back of the abandoned shop to look for something they could use as disguises.
