One month later…
Shadow leaned back and arched his shoulders upwards; letting them stretch from slight stiffness, then put his arms behind his head, smiling as Emra lay against his chest, allowing them both to relax in the warm sun of the afternoon. He smiled and gently stroked Emra's head, moving one of her three bangs out of her face. She looked up at him and smiled, her blue eyes glistening at him, making him almost breathless. He leaned down and nuzzled his nose against hers, and she cuddled up closer to him, sighing in content. Shadow smiled again and leaned back onto the grass, wrapping one arm around her to keep her close.

Suddenly a small splash of water hit them, and they both shot up from where they lay, looking around. Sonic stood laughing at them near the edge of the lake, and Emra's ears flattened. She stood up in a huff and instantly zipped at Sonic, and began splashing him hard with the water from the shallows. Sonic yelped playfully and ran off, with Emra right on his heels, chasing him as one would when playing tag. Shadow laughed in amusement and stood up, brushing the water from his fur and smiling to himself. Thing had gone quite back to normal since that last fight…

A cold chill tickled down Shadow's back, and he closed his eyes for a moment, but then opened them, crossing his arms calmly and sighing silently.

"Hello Mephiles," he said aloud.

"You were expecting me," came Mephiles' wicked voice. Shadow scoffed.

"Not really. I just figured you would show up sooner or later," he said, then turned around to face his enemy. "Have something to say do you?"

"A thing or two, yes," Mephiles hissed. "The first I think you already know; that this conflict between you and I is far from over, and one day, I will have my revenge on you!"

"And the second?" Shadow asked, a hint of annoyance in his voice at what his foe had just said. Mephiles' cruel glare turned into a wicked smirk as he glanced beyond Shadow and at Emra.

"The second is that you should keep a special close eye on your lovely Emra… especially if you don't want to lose her. I've taken quite a liking to her." Mephiles said with a greedy look in his eye. Shadow gave a slight smirk.

"I thought you'd learn after your last tried it that she'll knock out a few of your teeth before she lets you get too close…" he cracked, causing Mephiles to clear his throat and rub at his jaw, but then he looked back up at Shadow sharply.

"Mark my words Shadow, I'll--"

"Nothing you can say or do will ever bring me down, Mephiles. We may be connected, but we are forever different, because where you have nothing, I have everything. I can love, whereas you can never love, or know what love is… and that is what makes you weak."

Mephiles glared at Shadow and clenched his fist, but Shadow just looked him straight in the eye without fear, undaunted. Mephiles snorted in anger and crossed his arms.

"Very well, Shadow the Hedgehog… Until we meet again," he hissed, summoning dark shadows around him.

"I'll be ready for you." Shadow said, just as Mephiles vanished from sight. Then he relaxed, letting his arms drop to his side.

"Shadow?" Shadow turned around to find Emra walking over to him. "Is something wrong?"

"Not at all, Emra," he replied, walking up to her and taking her hands in his. "I was just thinking."

"What about?" Emra asked, tilting her head to one side slightly. Shadow shrugged.

"Nothing in particular," he said, pulling her over to him and kissing her. Emra sighed in content and wrapped her arms behind his shoulders as he held her close. Shadow felt his fur rise to her touch once more and his heart start pounding again just before parting his lips from hers and looking her in her eyes. He smiled and touched her cheek, and Emra smiled, remembering the moment when the trance Mephiles had over her had been broken in the nick of time by the mere image of Shadow in her mind, and the feelings she had for him in her heart, and then the moment when he broke the magic of the door that had been enchanted to keep her prisoner.

So much power… in just that one simple feeling… it made them both wonder what other sorts of things awaited them and the trials their love might face in the future… but one thing was for certain, and that thing was that they would be ready for it, no matter what.

"If you have Love, you don't need to have anything else."
                                                      ~Sir James M. Barrie

The End
FINALLY! I finished it! Now I just have to finish 'From the Inside Out'...

Anyway, that quote is said by one of my favorite authors, J.M. Barrie. Its not the whole quote, but its the basic majority that makes for a good way to end a story, don't you think?
