When a Cat's Lives Run Out...

Jacques hit the floor of the canyon with a loud grunt, but he ignored the pain in his aching limbs and scrambled over to Sea Cat, who still lay motionless on the stoney ground. He quickly knelt beside her and held her up in one arm, turning his face towards his with the other.

"Sea Cat?!" he asked.

A single, quick shimmering slit of her blue eyes... then nothing.

Jacques gently took her wrist in his hand and checked for a pulse... But she was like ice. Jacques felt a gasp leave his throat and his lip quiver. He looked at Sea Cat's face, then closed his eyes and sighed in regret, his hand sliding from her wrist to gently clasp her limp hand.

Garin jumped from the small ledge he was on and landed on the canyon floor, falling forward on his knees from lack of balance, but then he stood up again and shook himself off.

"Sea Cat!" Garin shouted as he ran over to Jacques, who held the limp girl in his arms. "Sea Cat, wake up!"

"Garin..." Jacques muttered.

"Sea Cat! Sea Cat, answer me! SEA CAT!!"

"Garin, it... its no use." Jacques tried to state firmly. "She... She's dead Garin."

Silence overcame Garin like a deadly clap of thunder ringing in his ears. He stumbled back and nearly fell over in horror. He barely managed to hold himself up on his knees as he stared in utter horror and disbelief.

The cat's nine lives had finally run out.
